Rolls Royce Hangar
We were appointed by Manchester Airport Group (MAG) in joint venture with developer Stoford, to provide a new hangar facility at East Midlands Airport for Rolls Royce.
The new hangar was designed to house both Rolls Royce鈥檚 Gulfstream G650 corporate jet and its heritage Spitfire collection. This included the iconic 144 Mark 19 Spitfire which was undergoing refurbishment.
The hangar was designed to accommodate separate heritage and corporate hangars. This comprised one hangar for the on-going maintenance and restoration needs for the heritage team and the other to accommodate the day to day needs of the corporate aviation team.

Challenge
To meet the client鈥檚 requirements, the hangars were connected by a central spine. The modern, light efficient design incorporated a flexible layout if alternative aircraft were added to the corporate fleet. Each hangar incorporated a separate maintenance and workshop space. A central spine linked both hangars and incorporated conference and meeting facilities, offices, seminars space, chief engineer and flight offices, a Spitfire library, crew room, locker, show and WC accommodation. Views were provided to both hangars from the first-floor offices enabling visitors to see and understand both the heritage of rolls Royce and its current business requirements.
A major factor in the design of the facility was to create a STEM training facility whereby Rolls Royce could accommodate school children and students for STEM training and seminar events.
The facility was positioned with direct access to the taxiway system and to maximise views from the first floor Board Room of the runway and airfield.
Solution
A partnering approach was adopted. We worked closely with Rolls Royce in the early stages of design to understand their requirements and formulate a brief for the project. Regular workshops were held with MAG, Stoford and Rolls Royce to develop the concept, space planning and detail design.
From the onset, visualisations and 3D models were used to develop the design and ensure buy-in from all the project stakeholders. This assisted the Rolls Royce team to maximise their requirements and ensure an efficient operational layout.
