Guernsey Airport Airside Rehabilitation
Guernsey鈥檚 Airport is the gateway to and from the island plus a crucial supply link, with thousands of tonnes of essential freight and services flown in per annum.
We have been working with Guernsey Airport since 2007 to plan the reconstruction of the airside environment so the airport can continue serving the island for the next 30 years. We provided a true multidisciplinary service to deliver the project within time and budget.
The project was funded by the States of Guernsey and is declared to be 鈥渢he largest civil engineering project to have been carried out in the Island鈥檚 history鈥�. To mark the success of the project, members of our team were awarded a Certificate of Appreciation presented at a ceremony, in the Airport Terminal, hosted by the Public Services Minister. 听The project has since been recognised by the British Construction Industry Award scheme through a 鈥淗ighly Commended鈥� award under International Project of the Year.

Challenge
We were initially appointed to prepare a masterplan and scoping study for the airside infrastructure developments. This included measuring the existing characteristics against regulatory requirements and recommendations. The study identified the need to rehabilitate life expired aprons and taxiways, re-profile and displace the runway 120m to the west to accommodate new Runway End Safety Areas (RESA). A new Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) and control system was also required as well as a new surface water drainage system with improved pollution control management measures. Following this, we were commissioned to undertake the detail design, obtain Planning Approval and project manage the construction.
A unique challenge in the design was the buildability constraints working on a small island. Not only were there logistical constraints getting materials to the island but also transportation within the island.
Solution
We provided a true multi-disciplinary team to deliver the project within time and budget.
Our aviation engineering design team completed the detail design and tender documentation. 听Regular meetings were undertaken with the Airport and stakeholders to identify project requirements and constraints. Presentations were made to the Client Project Board to determine in detail the project contact with decisions recorded on the Project Decision Register.
To support the project, we submitted three Planning Applications together with the associated Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Working closely with the Island鈥檚 Planning Authority, we fostered a positive working relationship, supporting the team with our expansive expertise.
We managed the tender process which included a value engineering exercise with the preferred contractor and provided site supervision and project management for the 26-month contract.
