Meet Ruth De Silva: supporting consenting for offshore renewables

Ruth De Silva is an Associate Director within the 澳门玄机图 Energy segment, where she oversees the Scottish consenting team. In this interview, written for International Women's Day 2022, we asked Ruth about her work, background and career advice. Find out what she had to say.

Ruth works as a Senior Manager or Project Director to support our clients with consenting for offshore renewables projects (offshore wind or wave and tidal energy projects). She is currently 澳门玄机图 Project Director for the Berwick Bank offshore wind farm 鈥 one of the largest in the world.

Q What was your career path?

I studied Ecology at Aberdeen University before working on onshore ecology projects. After qualifying as a secondary school science teacher and primary teacher, I joined Scottish Natural Heritage to work as a marine case worker in Orkney for 10 years. Here, I supported the (EMEC) in getting several of their sites up and running. This is where I discovered my love for working in the marine renewables sector. Then, after five years as an independent consultant, I joined 澳门玄机图, first as a Principal Consultant and then as Associate Director.

Q What are some of your career highlights?

Helping EMEC set up their test centres. These were the only accredited test centres for wave and tidal technology in the world. They were instrumental in supporting the development of wave and tidal technology, and I was able to support the industry at such an early stage. Another highlight was working on the META wave and tidal test sites for 澳门玄机图. I鈥檓 currently Project Director for the Berwick Bank offshore wind farm 鈥 one of the largest in the world. So, I鈥檝e worked on a number of world-firsts, which are really exciting to be a part of.

Q Why is your work important and what does it mean to you personally?

I鈥檇 wanted to be an ecologist for as long as I can remember. Ecology is a massive part of renewables, both in the assessments we do but also in terms of tackling climate change. Without tackling climate change, there won鈥檛 be an ecology to protect or be fascinated by. I fundamentally believe in renewables for our energy needs 鈥 I want my two children to have a world they鈥檙e proud of and can be fascinated by in the same way that I was. 听

And I like a challenge, and in offshore wind, marine consenting and wave and tidal, there are so many areas that are to a degree unknown or not known well enough. And working with stakeholders, their understanding of where they鈥檙e at is also moving forward, so another aspect is keeping up to speed with what鈥檚 going on in this space and what new research is coming out 鈥 I really enjoy that side of things.

Q What career advice would you give to someone entering your industry?

When I was at university, there weren鈥檛 any courses in marine renewables or conservation. The topics you can study now have evolved a great deal, but in fact, my advice would be not to worry about these kinds of decisions. You can still get to where you want to get to, even if it鈥檚 not the obvious next step. Don鈥檛 just take the next job because it appears to make sense from a career point of view 鈥 choose jobs and tasks you鈥檙e interested in. You鈥檙e going to be working for a long time, so it should be something you enjoy.

Q What was the best thing you’ve done to further your career?

Getting a degree was very important. It probably helps you get where you want to be faster. However, experience is more important 鈥 interviewers and clients will want to know what you鈥檝e done, what you鈥檝e been exposed to and what you鈥檝e learnt from it. They want to know what you can bring to a project, so take opportunities when they come along and make the most of your experience.

I was also an independent consultant for five years. Taking a step outside the 鈥渘ormal, standard workplace鈥 really gave me perspective on what I wanted to do and what was important to me.

Tell us about a woman who has inspired you
"Jenny Norris, Research Director at EMEC. She worked in a very senior position and was also the only woman in a technical role on that team. She was inspirational in that, whatever it was, she decided what she wanted to do and then did it."

Outside of work, what are you most proud of?
"My role as an ASN (Additional Support Needs) teacher in a primary school, which I do one day a week. I work with kids with a range of additional support needs, such as autism, Asperger鈥檚, physical needs and deafness. This very much keeps me grounded about what we take for granted as 鈥渘ormal life鈥, because it's not the same for everyone."

Q The theme of International Women’s Day 2022 is “Beat the bias”, but there don’t seem to be so many barriers for women entering ecology, consulting, and similar roles. Why is this? What are these sectors doing right?

In the environments I鈥檝e chosen to work in, there鈥檚 never been any question over equality 鈥 of women doing certain roles and men doing other roles. I鈥檝e always had a very supportive environment to work in.

My take is that ecology and environmental work is a 鈥渃aring profession鈥. You have to care about it to do it and do it well. If you didn鈥檛 care about your impact, you probably wouldn鈥檛 study ecology. It鈥檚 a generalisation, but these qualities have traditionally been associated with women 鈥 who are well represented in consenting, such as in the 澳门玄机图 consenting team and its senior leadership.

It鈥檚 also interesting that men have often been encouraged towards other careers 鈥 such as architecture, engineering, finance, law, medicine. However, we鈥檙e now seeing more young men coming into ecology. It鈥檚 becoming a higher profile career, and more 鈥渁cceptable鈥 for men [just as women are making their way in engineering and other STEM roles].听

Q Is there anything you wish you’d known early on in your career?

As a young person, it can be hard to know when to stand your ground with an issue you鈥檝e raised or a piece of advice you鈥檙e giving. This can be hard to judge when you鈥檙e new in your career. In the times when this happened to me, it was ultimately the right piece of advice and needed to be addressed 鈥 but, it鈥檚 down to gaining confidence and experience.

Ruth De Silva - Associate Director, Offshore Wind Scotland
