The Levelling Up Agenda and London: our own analysis
Levelling Up is a Government policy which aims to reduce imbalances, specifically economic, between areas and social groups across the UK. But with its whitepaper still yet to be published, does the lack of detail on London鈥檚 specific role imply it won't be part of the Levelling Up Agenda? Or even that London will be 鈥楲evelled Down鈥�? We take a look at what we know so far.

The Levelling Up Agenda
Our analysis explores a potential misconception that London is in less need of Levelling Up than the rest of the country. The data shows that in some London boroughs there is a higher proportion of working age people with no qualifications compared to other UK cities. Added to that is the fact that the percentage of people in employment in knowledge-intensive services in some London Boroughs is significantly lower than the national average.
In fact, rather than being a听homogenous region of universal prosperity, different London boroughs have extensive disparity in wealth, business opportunities and access to education.
From our research it's clear that London as a whole shouldn't be pitted against other regions. London is made up of a mass of areas with unique identities, all with individual socioeconomic challenges. And there are areas of London that can't afford to be Levelled Down, just as Levelling Up gains momentum. So why is it London is perceived as needing less help than the rest of the UK?
